Recommended route

Lean national, but the delta is small. Watch the per-country administrative overhead — every office has its own renewal calendar, language requirements and oppositions docket.

Filing decisions can be complex. Consider consulting a qualified IP attorney in your jurisdiction before you file.

EUTM vs national, at a glance

  • One filingAn EU trade mark (EUTM), filed once at EUIPO, protects your mark in all 27 EU member states with a single application and a single renewal — base official fee ~€850 for one class online (+€50 for the 2nd class, +€150 each further class).
  • All-or-nothingAn EUTM has unitary character: an earlier right in just one member state can block or cancel the whole EUTM. You can then convert it to national filings while keeping the original date — but clear earlier rights first.
  • NationalA national trade mark (filed at each national office) covers only that one country — cheaper for a single market and more resilient, since a problem in one country does not sink the others.
  • MadridGoing wider than the EU? The Madrid System (WIPO) lets you extend protection internationally from a single application — outside the scope this tool models.

Page updated 2026-10-17EUIPO and readable national fees verified 2026-10-17 against EUIPO + national IPO fee schedules. An EUTM has unitary character: a single successful opposition or earlier right in any one member state can defeat the whole application (you can then convert to national filings while keeping the original date). That risk — not just the headline price — drives the route decision.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an EU trade mark (EUTM) cost in 2026?

The EUIPO official filing fee is €850 for one class, +€50 for the 2nd class, and +€150 for every class from the 3rd onward (electronic filing). One EUTM covers all 27 EU member states. Renewal uses the same fee schedule. Verified 2026-10-17 against Regulation (EU) 2017/1001, Annex I.

Is it cheaper to file one EUTM or several national trademarks?

It depends on how many countries you need. A single EUTM (€850) is usually cheaper than filing in four or more member states individually, and it always covers all 27. For one to three target countries the national route can be cheaper — Germany is €290, Spain €127.88 electronic, Italy ~€149 (unconfirmed, retained from 2026-06-13) — but it covers only the states you file in.

What is the EUIPO SME Fund and how much does it reimburse?

Voucher 2 is exhausted for new applications in 2026, verified on 2026-10-17. No reimbursement is deducted by this calculator. Its published terms reimburse 75% of the trade-mark application and additional-class fees — at both EU and EU-national level — capped at €700 per beneficiary, for the filing cycle only (not renewals). Existing approved vouchers are not modelled here. The 50% rate applies only to international (WIPO) registrations, which this tool does not model.

What does "unitary character" mean for an EUTM?

An EUTM is a single right covering all 27 member states at once. The flip side is that an earlier right or an absolute ground for refusal in just one member state can defeat the whole application. If that happens you can convert the EUTM into national applications while keeping the original filing date.

Do EUTM renewals cost the same as the original filing?

Yes. Since the EUIPO aligned renewal fees to filing fees, electronic renewal is €850 for one class, +€50 for the 2nd, +€150 from the 3rd onward, per 10-year cycle. The SME Fund does not apply to renewals.

Why do Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg collapse into one filing?

There is no separate Belgian, Dutch or Luxembourg trademark office. All three are administered jointly by the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP), so selecting any of them produces a single BOIP filing rather than three.

Are these the official fees or do they include attorney charges?

These are the official government office fees only (EUIPO and each national IPO), with no attorney or filing-agent surcharge. Actual cost to you will be higher if you instruct a representative. Always check the linked official source before filing — fees change.

How current is this fee data?

EUIPO and readable national schedules were verified on 2026-10-17. IT, PT, SI, EE, LT, MT and GR could not be read: their values and date of 2026-06-13 are retained as UNKNOWN. BOIP renewal per class also remains UNKNOWN. Rates use the ECB snapshot of 2026-10-16; Bulgaria uses euros. Review is due after 90 days. France: the paper surcharge is unconfirmed (sin confirmar), not published by INPI and excluded from the calculation. A paper result for France is therefore a subtotal, not a confirmed total.
